1. Provides and coordinates direct and indirect patient care in perioperative care to achieve optimal outcomes.
2. Facilitates smooth patient care in the surgical setting within the operating room:
- Performs duties such as scrubbing and circulating responsibilities as delegated by the RN in charge, within the MOH scope of practice.
- Prepares materials and equipment in the OT based on surgical and surgeon preferences.
- Assists the surgeon and nurses in receiving, transferring, and positioning patients before and after surgery.
- Assists the surgeon and anesthetist during procedures, anticipating their needs to facilitate their work; monitors vital parameters.
- Counts all sponges, instruments, needles, and tools; maintains a sterile environment by adhering to procedural guidelines.
- Operates intraoperative C-arm equipment if necessary, under physician guidance.
- Ensures accurate handling and recording of specimens as per the Safe Handling of Specimens policy.
- Verifies sterilization and integrity of sterile packages.
3. Supports smooth conduct of anesthesia care in the operating rooms:
- Sets up, checks, and prepares anesthesia supplies and equipment for cases.
- Responds promptly and appropriately to emergency situations, considering patient age-specific needs from birth to geriatrics.
- Assists anesthetists with monitoring, induction, extubation, and other procedures such as difficult intubation, regional blocks, cannulation, and administration of anesthesia.
- Assists in safe and efficient room turnover activities.
4. Supplies management:
- Maintains, monitors, orders, and follows up on supply levels of medications, store supplies, and special-order items.
5. Equipment management:
- Performs daily routine verification and cleaning of equipment to ensure proper functioning prior to surgery.
- Reports equipment issues to Biomedical Engineering.
- Maintains an updated Equipment Stock Register.
- Ensures equipment and resources are used economically and efficiently per manufacturer guidelines.
6. Implements and adheres to International Patient Safety Policies.
7. Demonstrates knowledge of and enforces aseptic techniques and infection control practices at all times to ensure safety.
8. Acts as the infection control liaison for the department.
9. Demonstrates flexibility in duties and on-call responsibilities as assigned.
10. Maintains accurate, timely records, respecting patient confidentiality.
11. Documents assessments, interventions, and pertinent information in patients' healthcare records promptly and continuously.
