Job Responsibilities and Expectations for General Practitioner

The role of a General Practitioner in a hospital setting involves providing comprehensive care to patients. Key responsibilities include taking Most Responsible Physician (MRP) responsibilities for patients under direct care, transferring care to Specialists or Consultants when admission is required, and providing professional advice and technical services as privileged.

Additionally, GPs are responsible for the care they provide, adhering to hospital policies, and working collegially with all hospital staff. They must also ensure proper handover processes are followed when off duty and maintain confidentiality in all matters according to MOH policy.

A General Practitioner is expected to contribute to clinical guidelines, critical care pathways, and managed care processes as needed and participate in on-call duties as per the department rota and patient needs. They are also responsible for ensuring patients and families are fully informed about their condition ethically and humanely.

  • The GP does not have admission privileges and will transfer care to a Specialist or Consultant when admission or hospital transfer is required.
  • They will take Most Responsible Physician (MRP) responsibilities for patients under their direct care in the Emergency Room or primary care clinic.
  • They will provide professional advice and technical services, as privileged, to other GPs or patients upon request.
  • They will give and request consultations according to hospital policies.
  • They are responsible for the care they provide, taking professional responsibility within the hospital environment.
  • They are expected to work collegially with all hospital staff.
  • They must adhere to the rules, regulations, and guidelines of their section and department.
  • They should contribute to clinical guidelines, critical care pathways, and managed care processes as needed or upon request.
  • They will participate in on-call duties as per the department rota and patient needs.
  • When off duty, they must ensure proper handover processes are followed.
  • They are responsible for ensuring patients and families are fully informed about their condition ethically and humanely.
  • They must protect patients from anxiety caused by poorly understood medical conversations and avoid criticizing colleagues in front of patients or relatives unless in a formal medical-legal context.
  • They should discuss serious or repeated minor performance issues of other medical staff with their Head of Department for early intervention.
  • All medical records must be completed accurately, legibly, and promptly according to policy.
  • They should participate in mortality and morbidity meetings openly and collegially.
  • Confidentiality must be maintained in all matters according to MOH policy.
  • They are encouraged to contribute to teaching staff, patients, and the public as needed.
  • They should seek to improve their service through audits, research, educational attendance, and resource utilization.
  • Participation in hospital quality programs and committees is encouraged if chosen.
  • They should engage in quality improvement and safety activities of the organization.
