Leadership Role

  • The role of Master is a position of significant authority and responsibility on the vessel. This individual will have overriding power to take necessary actions for the safety, security, and well-being of the crew, the vessel, and the environment.

  • The Master will be responsible for reviewing and reporting on the safety management system, ensuring its deficiencies are addressed in accordance with established procedures.

  • Statutory certification must be maintained valid under the supervision of the Master.

  • The Master will motivate the vessel crew to understand and adhere to the safety management system, providing them with easy access to relevant information.

  • Acting as tug manager, the Master will coordinate crew attendance for operations, provide stores, and ensure readiness for operations.

  • The Master will comply with SVITZER health, safety, environment, and security management systems and procedures, including those related to cyber security.

  • Familiarity with relevant OH&S, environmental, and security regulations associated with tug operations and reporting accordingly.

  • The Master will manage tug crew discipline, addressing issues as needed and escalating to management when necessary.

  • Supervision and assistance with tug maintenance as required.

  • The preparation of operational reports where necessary.

  • Participation in safety training, including the training of other crew members.

  • Induction training of visitors, employees, and authorized persons accessing the vessel.

  • Participation in operational improvement exercises and liaison with management regarding improved operational procedures, promoting a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Ensuring adequate resources are available for activities and tasks onboard, such as cargo operations and ballast operations.

  • Compliance with local, regional, national, and international legislation.

Action Authority

  • In the event that a crew member poses a risk to the vessel or others due to non-compliance with SMS provisions, anti-social behavior, alcohol/drug use, or ill-discipline, the Master has the authority to discharge the crew member. The Master must notify shore-based management in all instances, preferably in advance.

  • A replacement crew member may be required according to the Safe Manning Certificate before the vessel can continue operation and comply with the regulations of the company safety management system.
