The role of a General Practitioner (GP) in a hospital setting is multifaceted and demanding.
Key Responsibilities- The GP does not have admission privileges, requiring transfer of care to a Specialist or Consultant when necessary.
- They take on Most Responsible Physician (MRP) responsibilities for patients under their direct care in the Emergency Room or primary care clinic.
- Transferring MRP position requires agreement from another physician.
- Providing professional advice and technical services to other GPs or patients upon request.
- Ensuring patients and families are fully informed about their condition in an ethical and humane manner.
- Protecting patients from anxiety caused by poorly understood medical conversations.
- Maintaining confidentiality in all matters according to policy.
- Participating in mortality and morbidity meetings openly and collegially.
- Contributing to clinical guidelines, critical care pathways, and managed care processes as needed.
- Engaging in quality improvement and safety activities of the organization.
- Seeking opportunities to improve service through audits, research, educational attendance, and resource utilization.
- Participating in hospital quality programs and committees if chosen.
- Working collegially with all hospital staff.
- Discussing serious performance issues with the Head of Department for early intervention.
