Electrical Protection Specialist Role

This role involves the design, implementation, and maintenance of electrical protection systems in oil and gas facilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the reliability and efficiency of these systems.

  1. Testing and Maintenance:

    The Electrical Protection Specialist will perform regular testing of low-voltage (LV) and high-voltage (HV) protection relays and switchgear to ensure they are functioning correctly and efficiently.

  2. Technical Support:

    The specialist will provide technical assistance as required for the testing and commissioning of new protection relays.

  3. Fault Diagnosis:

    The Electrical Protection Specialist will participate in the diagnosis and resolution of issues related to protection relays and switchgear.

  4. Collaboration and Documentation:

    The specialist will work closely with other engineers and technical staff to develop and implement effective protection strategies, maintain accurate documentation, and ensure adherence to industry standards.

  5. Training and Development:

    The Electrical Protection Specialist will provide on-the-job training to team members as per plan, contributing to their professional growth and development.

  6. System Upgrades:

    The specialist will collaborate in the planning and execution of system upgrades and improvements to enhance overall performance and reliability.

  7. Scheduling and Database Management:

    The Electrical Protection Specialist will develop and implement testing plans for all relays in the plant, ensuring timely execution and updating the protection relays setting database accordingly.

  8. Technical Transparency:

    The specialist will foster a culture of technical transparency through personal involvement and coaching at all levels.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field is required.

  • Minimum of 12 years' experience in the Oil and Gas Industry, with at least 8 years as a protection engineer is preferred.

  • Previous experience in power plants is highly desirable.

  • Strong knowledge of electrical safety rules, switching programs, and PTW regulations is essential.

  • Proven experience in inspection and testing of LV & HV switchgear AIS & GIS is necessary.

  • Proficiency with relays & switchgear testing equipment such as CMC356, Fluke power analyser, and CPC100 is required.

  • Detailed knowledge of protection relay types from various manufacturers is essential.

  • Experience with protection coordination software & relay software (ETAP/Digsilent, DIGSI, PCM, Test Universe, etc.) is preferred.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to mentor and coach electrical technicians and engineers in protection relay testing fundamentals is necessary.

  • Familiarity with ERP systems and office applications is beneficial.
