Mission Critical Ubuntu Engineering

We aim to make Ubuntu suitable for mission-critical environments such as automotive, aerospace, industrial robotics, and other highly regulated sectors. With over 50% market share in enterprise Linux, we want to leverage our position to innovate and bring open source solutions to these high-stakes industries.

About the Role

This Development Lifecycle Engineer will bridge Canonical's open-source engineering processes with regulated technology platform requirements, focusing on compliance and certification. This is not a theoretical exercise; we aim to enhance delivery quality, security, and developer experience.

You will lead the charge in implementing continuous improvement processes, establishing qualification requirements, and working closely with engineering stakeholders to challenge and support existing development lifecycle processes.

Your Responsibilities
  • Implement the vision and strategy for Engineering Excellence.
  • Represent Ubuntu and its partners in front of customers and consortia to showcase excellence.
  • Coordinate and positively influence the engineering ways of working.
  • Develop skills through coaching, feedback, and hands-on technical leadership.
  • Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams and external stakeholders.
  • Advocate and advance modern, agile software development practices.
  • Help develop and evangelize great engineering and organizational practices.
  • Grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with industry values.
Requirements
  • Strong experience in engineering and process management in an agile environment.
  • A proven track record of developing and growing people and teams.
  • Success in leading compliance and certification efforts, understanding stakeholder management.
  • Knowledge or certification addressing industry standards such as ISO IEC 9001, 25010, and 15504 / SPICE.
  • Experience working on successful open-source projects known for their demonstrated engineering processes.
Desirable Skills
  • Background as a software developer.
  • Experience in establishing product engineering development metrics and KPIs.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
About This Role

This role requires a strong understanding of engineering processes and their application in a regulated environment. The ideal candidate will have experience in leading compliance and certification efforts, as well as developing and growing people and teams.

The selected individual will be responsible for implementing continuous improvement processes, establishing qualification requirements, and working closely with engineering stakeholders to challenge and support existing development lifecycle processes.
