Job Description for General Practitioner

The role of a General Practitioner (GP) in our healthcare setting encompasses a comprehensive range of responsibilities and expectations.

  • The GP does not have admission privileges and will transfer care to a Specialist or Consultant when admission or hospital transfer is required.
  • They will take Most Responsible Physician (MRP) responsibilities for patients under their direct care in the Emergency Room or primary care clinic.
  • The MRP position can only be transferred with the agreement of another physician.
Key Responsibilities and Expectations
  1. Provide professional advice and technical services, as privileged, to other GPs or patients upon request.
  2. Give and request consultations according to hospital policies.
  3. Be responsible for the care they provide, taking professional responsibility within the hospital environment.
  4. Work collegially with all hospital staff.
  5. Adhere to the rules, regulations, and guidelines of their section and department.
  6. Contribute to clinical guidelines, critical care pathways, and managed care processes as needed or upon request.
  7. Participate in on-call duties as per the department rota and patient needs.
  8. Ensure proper handover processes are followed when off duty.
  9. Ensure patients and families are fully informed about their condition ethically and humanely.
  10. Protect patients from anxiety caused by poorly understood medical conversations and avoid criticizing colleagues in front of patients or relatives unless in a formal medical-legal context.
  11. Discuss serious or repeated minor performance issues of other medical staff with their Head of Department for early intervention.
  12. Complete medical records accurately, legibly, and promptly according to policy.
  13. Participate in mortality and morbidity meetings openly and collegially.
  14. Maintain confidentiality in all matters according to MOH policy.
  15. Contribute to teaching staff, patients, and the public as needed.
  16. Seek to improve service through audits, research, educational attendance, and resource utilization.
  17. Participate in hospital quality programs and committees if chosen.
  18. Engage in quality improvement and safety activities of the organization.
