This role reports directly to the Executive Director of Development for the Wilmer Eye Institute. 

The Sr. Associate Director of Donor Relations plays an integral role in devising and executing stewardship, donor relations, and volunteer engagement strategies. This includes programmatic leadership, the writing and designing of personalized donor impact reports, the development of volunteer engagement and board development strategies, and creating other complex special stewardship and engagement opportunities for donors and volunteers for Johns Hopkins. As a leader and subject matter expert, the Sr. Associate Director may advise leaders on the best tools and strategies for engaging and inspiring donors and volunteers and facilitating the impact of philanthropy and volunteerism on the Institution. This position will partner with Development Office (DOFF) leaders in providing strategic and tactical stewardship and engagement guidance. 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with DOFF leaders to drive strategy for comprehensive stewardship and donor relations efforts that align with the overall vision of the unit and/or Institution. Build and manage both programming and personalized touches to strengthen relationships with, engage and retain donors, grateful patients and/or alumni by expressing gratitude, showing the impact of gifts and increasing giving. 
  • Collaborate with DOFF leaders to drive strategy for comprehensive engagement of volunteers at all points in the engagement journey, including maximizing engagement of board and council members across the institution and serving as a source for best practices.
  • Develop and launch a volunteer recognition program. 
  • Develop strategies for institutional-level volunteer events that are inclusive of volunteers across the organization, elevate the role of volunteers at Johns Hopkins, and serve to enhance their affinity and effectiveness.
  • Independently design and produce high-quality stewardship deliverables. Create strong partnerships with faculty and administrative leaders to ensure accuracy and authenticity of deliverables and impact reports. 
  • Develop and oversee all aspects of institutional volunteer communication strategy, including but not limited to online communications and campaign newsletters.
  • Proactively identify gaps and opportunities with top priority donor and volunteer relationships and bring strategies to fundraisers, engagement officers, and relationship managers utilize the donor database (CRM) in daily work, including updating individual records, pulling reports, and interpreting dashboards and data 
  • Collaborate with central teams and other departments on shared donor and volunteer relationships.
  • Remain updated about industry best practices and routinely suggest new ways to implement and push the field forward as appropriate. 
  • Lead the creation and implementation of high-impact donor and volunteer engagement initiatives in collaboration with leaders and fundraisers. 
  • May work with or manage donor or volunteer relationships in a non-fundraising capacity. May staff or support the work of advisory boards and/or volunteer bodies. 
  • Build out and manage reporting calendars and practices for the tracking and stewardship of different types of giving and impact, including endowments. 
  • Facilitate and translate institutional impact and research by adapting and customizing information for individual donors and volunteers, boards and councils, and audiences. 
  • Write complex reports and coach faculty about the utilization of endowed funds according to donor intent. 
  • May be responsible for leading the work and/or coaching and mentorship of other staff.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

In addition to the duties listed above, the Sr. Associate Director: 

  • May have the opportunity to contribute the communication efforts managed by Wilmer's marketing team, including content management of plasma screens, websites, etc. 
  • Distribute Wilmer's marketing collateral. 
  • Write articles and stories about philanthropy at Wilmer and work to get them placed in other Johns Hopkins media outlets and publications. 
  • Create and implement a stewardship program specifically for donors who have funded endowed positions, endowed research funds, or who have given principal-level gifts. 
  • Serve on institutional working groups/committees and lead training as needed.
  • Support stewardship events by preparing briefings, creating invitations, and facilitating leadership requests. 
  • Manage the donor recognition list in Wilmer's annual report.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years of related professional experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in communications, marketing, non-profit management or a related field. 
  • Graphic design and report design experience. 
  • Project management experience and/or certification. 
  • Experience working directly with donors and/or volunteers. 
  • Experience in higher education or an academic medical center.
