Documentation Excellence: Technical Author Role

The role of a Technical Author is to lead documentation efforts for engineering teams, focusing on product or family of products. You will help develop documentation that serves user needs, embracing Diátaxis documentation framework principles.

As a Technical Author, you will have broad impact and responsibility for the quality of the user experience with the product, contributing towards long-term project success.

You will participate in development of product strategy, have input into product design and user experience, combining technical expertise with leadership in documentation.

This is not a traditional technical writer role. Even junior authors will have opportunity to develop and demonstrate technical authority.

You will be part of Canonical's documentation practice team, collaborating with other experts to define documentation excellence and drive development of documentation practice and theory across the company and open-source software community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Create, maintain, and improve software documentation
  • Work with engineering team members to help them make effective documentation contributions
  • Influence product development as an expert user with important opinions about function and design
  • Engage with user communities to ensure documentation meets their needs
  • Encourage and support community engagement in and contribution to documentation
  • Help standardize structure, presentation, style, and language of content across products
  • Collaborate with documentation peers to advance state of the art in documentation at Canonical
What We Are Looking For:
  • Cares deeply about functional written communication
  • Technical writer with programmer's mindset or programmer with record of producing excellent documentation
  • Record of community engagement in open-source software, documentation, research, or other disciplines
  • Sympathetic to needs and challenges of open-source software and its communities
  • Demonstrates technical curiosity and fascination with software technology and its challenges
  • Demonstrable documentation skills, insight, and enthusiasm
  • Experience of software development contexts; familiar with Linux, command line, application deployment, system operations, infrastructure management, Git, documentation markup languages
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Holds BSc/BA degree or equivalent
  • Able to travel twice a year for up to two weeks for events
