Drilling Operations Specialist

The Drilling Operations Specialist is responsible for ensuring the technical operational requirements of well activities are met. This includes design, planning, programming, execution, and review of all well activities on allocated rigs.

This position will be allocated complex, high-profile, high-risk, and high-cost rig activities. The specialist will support single or multi-rig operations to deliver wells within planned time, cost, and HSE targets by using optimum technology and best practices without compromising established policies and HSE standards.

Lessons learned from offset wells will be implemented; contributions will be made to performance analysis and improvement, target setting, and external benchmarking.

Key ResponsibilitiesTechnical Expertise:
  • Engineering degree or equivalent qualification required.
  • At least 5 years of experience in E&P well engineering with knowledge of well planning, well design, well programming, and well construction including completions.
  • Deep drilling experience is essential for this role.
  • Valid well control certificates and stuck pipe prevention training necessary.
  • Good oral and written technical English capability required.
  • Fully conversant with Well Planning software, directional drilling, and horizontal well operations with proven HSE and Operational leadership abilities in onshore oilfield operations.
Reporting and Location:

The Drilling Operations Specialist will report to a Senior Well Engineer.

This role is based in Muscat on a permanent basis. Due to the operational nature of the role, being available on call at any time of day or night mid-week and undertaking weekend work as part of the weekend duty roster is required.

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Contribute to relevant drilling, intervention, and completion programs. Develop or adapt suitable Basis of Design as required.
  2. Ensure equipment elements for Wells activities are compatible, on-time, and inspected as needed for successful installation.
  3. Provide Benchmarking data to assist performance monitoring and target setting. Understand what constitutes top quartile performance within the block.
  4. Maintain and control the availability and quality of services and equipment provided under various services contracts.
  5. Support the Drilling Manager to manage relevant operations from the office. Includes weekend duties.
  6. Ensure that all objectives of the well are achievable within agreed program time constraints and budget.
  7. Provide support and information to the rig site Drilling Supervisor on drilling, completion, work-over, abandonment, and all matters related to operations of a rig.
  8. Monitor work delivered and associated costs daily.
  9. Responsible for ensuring the most cost-effective techniques and equipment are available on site.
  10. Support changes in operations or designs as outlined in the well program under proper Management of Change.
  11. Ensure compliance with all legislative requirements and company's minimum standards.
  12. Manage the definition and specification of all permanent well drilling and completion equipment.
  13. Create necessary reports to support operation and ensure timely availability of personnel, equipment, and services.
  14. Establish and administer drilling and service contracts and maintain lines of communication between management and location.
  15. Conduct audits of rig operations and processes and report to management on drilling and related operations along with progress, problems, and incremental expenditure and safety issues.
  16. Ensure daily rig operations reports are submitted on time with valuable data representing actual operations on rig site.
