We are looking for a Software Support Engineer to work in a dynamic engineering role covering all layers of the stack, including bare metal, virtualization, containerization, storage, networking, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and open source applications. This role will challenge you to show your breadth of skills and work on almost any aspect of Ubuntu and open source applications.

This role deals with critical issues in the open source stack requiring upstream bug fixes. Our engineers work at any level of the stack, including the kernel and various languages, to understand and address software issues. Our group is critical to the success of our customers, partners, and Ubuntu itself.

You will help troubleshoot and drive issues to resolution with workarounds, guidance, and bug fixes to be released upstream and in Ubuntu. You will maintain close working relationships with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams.

The role entails:

  • Resolving complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes and other open source software", "
  • Maintaining a close working relationship with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams", "
  • Participating in upstream communities", "
  • Developing bug fixes, backport patches, and working with upstream for inclusion", "
  • Reviewing code produced by other engineers", "
  • Demonstrating good judgment in technical methods and techniques", "
  • Prioritizing work and managing time effectively against priorities", "
  • Participating in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation", "
  • Maintaining clear, technical, and concise communications", "

We are looking for someone with an exceptional academic record, background in Computer Science or STEM, experience with Linux and open source software, and experience with at least one programming language on Linux.

The ideal candidate has a drive to learn unfamiliar technology, can deep-dive difficult issues, and is willing to travel occasionally. Nice-to-have skills include a passion for technology and brilliant people, being curious, flexible, articulate, accountable, passionate, enterprising, thoughtful, and self-motivated.
