Communication Technician

A Communication Technician plays a critical role in the maintenance and optimal functioning of key communication systems such as Radio Systems, Public Address and General Alarm (PAGA) Systems, and Hotline Systems. Below are the roles and responsibilities for each system, within the context of maintenance and operational reliability:

1. General Responsibilities Across All Systems including of Radio system, PAGA System(Public Address and General Alarm) and Hotline systems

· Routine Maintenance: Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to avoid system failures.

· Troubleshooting & Repair: Identify faults, diagnose issues, and perform corrective maintenance.

· Installation & Commissioning: Assist in installing and testing new equipment or system upgrades.

· System Monitoring: Continuously monitor system performance and logs to detect anomalies early.

· Documentation: Maintain detailed records of maintenance, repairs, and system modifications.

· Compliance & Safety: Ensure systems meet industry safety, operational, and regulatory standards.

· Coordination: Work closely with other departments such as electrical, instrumentation, and safety teams.

Purpose: Ensures wireless communication between operational teams, often in industrial, offshore, or emergency settings.

Responsibilities:

· Conduct signal strength and coverage tests.

· Maintain base stations, repeaters, antennas, and handheld radios.

· Update and program radio channels and talk groups based on operational needs.

· Replace damaged or degraded components such as antennas, batteries, and microphones.

· Ensure radios are intrinsically safe in hazardous environments (e.g., oil & gas).

· Calibrate and test radio frequency equipment using appropriate test gear (e.g., spectrum analyzers).

3. PAGA (Public Address and General Alarm) System

Purpose: Used for emergency announcements, routine notifications, and alarms in facilities like plants, offshore platforms, and refineries.

Responsibilities:

· Inspect and test amplifiers, loudspeakers, microphones, and alarm tone generators.

· Perform sound coverage tests to ensure audibility in all critical areas.

· Monitor and maintain control panels and interface units.

· Ensure redundancy and failover systems (backup power, duplicate processors) are operational.

· Conduct functionality checks during emergency drills or simulated events.

· Troubleshoot audio distortion, feedback, or signal loss issues.

4. Hotline System

Purpose: Provides dedicated, direct-line communication for high-priority or emergency use between control rooms, departments, or external contacts.

Responsibilities:

· Inspect and test direct lines, ring-down phones, or dedicated voice circuits.

· Maintain power supply units, terminal blocks, and line interfaces.

· Ensure clear voice transmission and low latency during communication.

· Identify and fix line interruptions, cross-talk, or electrical noise issues.

· Regularly check emergency phones at muster points, evacuation areas, and control centers.

Key Skills Required

· Strong knowledge of electronic and communication systems.

· Proficiency in using testing equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, RF analyzers).

· Understanding safety protocols, especially in hazardous or classified areas.

· Ability to read technical drawings, wiring schematics, and network diagrams.

· Strong problem-solving and attention to detail.
